Abigail Spring grew up in rural VT. There she was surrounded by interesting people including; her mother, an artist, and her father, who collected intriguing people. Dinner conversation often covered such topics as quantum music, anti-war vitriol and Monet’s water lilies, sometimes all at the same time. Academically she was a stand out in a class of 15, but preferred art to academics. Her senior year in high school she left and worked as an artist’s apprentice for artist photographer Wes Disney and she has been pursuing art in some form or another ever since. Her first 3 years of undergraduate exploration were at the University of Vermont; she did performance art and political activism. The final 4 years of undergraduate work were at the Maine College of Art. She graduated with a B.F.A. in painting. After graduating Spring moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she was picked up by Peyton Wright Gallery. After this period of excitement, there was a brief change of direction when she applied to and was accepted at Vermont Law School. She did not go, but instead decided, to once again, dedicate herself to her art full time. In 2003 she moved to Portland, Oregon with her husband and her cat, where she paints fulltime in her daylight basement studio.
